Shop With Us - Loddon Farmers' Market

25/05/2013

It’s ‘Love your Local Market’ fortnight 15th – 29th May. Loddon Farmers’ market has joined the campaign to spread the word and promote everything that is good about local markets.  Look out for the advertising banner outside the market and come and join us at the next market on Saturday 25th May 9.30 – 1pm and help support this fantastic event.

Loddon Farmers’ Market is participating in the high profile, national, 2013 Love your Local Market campaign. Led by the National Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA) and backed by Central Government and the wider market industry.  The aim of ‘Love your Local Market’ is to provide a national spotlight on markets across the country and is being supported by both the markets industry and Government. The main aim of the campaign is to recruit new market traders and also to demonstrate the importance of the market as a community asset. The campaign aims to build affection and support for markets and enhance their status within the local community.  Look out for more about this campaign in the press and learn what is happening with Love your Local Market both locally and nationally.

Shiver me Timbers! Look out for the Pirates and Bandits themed scarecrows around the town this weekend.  The Loddon and District Business Association have organised a 2nd Scarecrow Festival after their very successful Jubilee event last year.  The scarecrows can be spotted between Friday 24th May, and Monday 27th May. The Farmers Market will be entering our very own scarecrow, The Landlubber. Look out for him as he welcomes you to the market on Saturday.

Also being held this Bank Holiday weekend is the Flower Festival at the church.  The theme this year is West End Musicals.  Make sure you go along and view the wonderful and very colourful exhibits on show.

We welcome Seabreeze Asparagus to the market this week.  Formally known as Wrentham Vegetables Ltd, they are specialist growers of Asparagus. Ideally located for growing Asparagus, the Suffolk coastal micro-climate shelters the tender spears against the frost whilst adding the freshness of "sea breeze" to the flavour. They work hard to ensure the crop is produced to the highest standards of food safety and in sympathy with the beautiful environment around us.  As a result they like to think theirs is amongst the finest Asparagus in the country and although the majority of their customers are commercial, they like to supply locally, by mail order and now on line!  You can even send (454g) gift boxes of asparagus as a gift, with a personalised message which you can write after payment has been made.  Ask at the stall for details.

Another new addition at the market this time will be Norfocopia.  Hidden in the forests of the Brecks, Tony Hook is creating food inspired by the land.  He is trying to achieve a compilation of products, recipes and menus that truly speak of this region. He uses foraged, collected, home grown and bought in foods.  As a start, to stock his Norfocopian larder, he has made fruit and vegetable butters and leathers, salad dressings, vinegars, marinades, cordials and drinks and he is now starting to develop recipes to use them in. Look out for him on Saturday as he will be bringing a selection of new preserves together with some venison products to the market.  Also look out for his Late-Hopped Cornerways Ketchup that will be available to try at the cafe!

Plan to Cook will be joining us this week and Julie will be demonstrating making cheese and paprika biscuits, a tasty savoury treat and gluten free lime and coconut cakes which have proven very popular.  There have been more and more requests for gluten free food so there will now be at least two different gluten free cakes and also gluten free samosas for sale on the stall.  Usual favourites like vegetarian sausages, keema and daal will all be available too.  Struggling with finding different present ideas?  Why not treat someone to a cookery course, Plan to cook vouchers available on request.

We would like to thank Bob Kingery of H & R Kingery, who has been supplying fresh local eggs at the market since we opened.  He is now retiring and we would like to wish him a long, healthy and happy retirement.  For one week only, eggs will be available at this coming market on Clinks Care Farm and Buckenham Farms stalls.  However, from 8th June will we have a new egg stall at the market, so you will be able to continue to purchase your fresh, free range, local eggs from the Farmers’ Market.

John Cook (Cookey’s Fish) is away on holiday this week, but he will return to the market on Saturday 8th June.  Please accept his apologies for any inconvenience.

Congratulations to Baron Westwood of Loddon who was the surprised and delighted winner of the FREE Prize Draw at the market on Saturday 11th May.  He won a bumper basket of produce, all generously donated by our stallholders  – and strode round to collect his winnings - as befits Loddon's own John Steed!!  Don't forget to sign in when you attend the market for your chance to win.  What have you got to lose!

It’s ‘Eat what you want! Day’ on Saturday in the USA! Wow, what a great idea, perhaps it’s one that we should adopt. So what better way to celebrate than to pop along to your Loddon Farmers’ Market this weekend and stock up on the delicious local food and drink that will be on sale. Start your day with a tasty breakfast at Roberto’s Market Cafe and then, later on perhaps, plan a fabulous meal made with good quality local ingredients purchased from the market and treat your family to the very best tasting food available. Next market is on Saturday 11th May 9.30 – 1pm.

We use this newsletter as a means to let you know when the market is next on, so that you have a chance to check out which stallholders will be attending and to make a note in your diary.  We would however, welcome your views as to what else we might include in the newsletter to make it a little more interesting to read.  So please, if you have any ideas, let Sharon know on smjy@moon-light.co.uk

We welcome back Evergreens Garden Centre to the market again this week. Carl Cooper (proprietor) has a passion for the unusual and different in the plant world. This ethos has been carried throughout the whole garden centre which is based in Beccles, Suffolk. Evergreens is a garden centre like no other, supplying premium quality plants from their 2.5 acre nursery, and many other garden related products from their 9,000 sq ft modern showroom.  Also located at the garden centre is a superb cafe, set in a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere.  Open 10am – 4pm every day and now offering lunches, it’s well worth a visit.

Not many places can boast such a wide diversity of unusual plants. Specialising in Exotics, Carnivorous, large specimen & unusual Evergreen shrubs. In fact as soon as you enter, you will see it’s a place like no other! If you require inspiration, or just have the need to do something different a visit to Evergreens is a must!  They try as much as possible to source plants from similar climates to the UK - places such as Italy, New Zealand and Japan for example.

Evergreens is a family run and owned business and you will clearly see that the stock is of premium quality, it is commonly known that some garden centres neglect their stock. However at Evergreens they realise that their stock is their business. They achieve great stock by using top quality compost (their own special mixture) with added feeds and additives to ensure healthy pest free plants. Throughout the nursery all stock is watered with natural spring water and regular feeding ensures that you take home a healthy plant with the very best chance of survival.  Come and visit Carl on his stall at the market or visit Evergreens Family Garden Centre Ltd., Weston, Beccles, Suffolk.  NR34 8TT. Opening times Mon – Sat 9am – 5pm Sun 10am – 4pm.

Come and visit Buckenham Farms at the market this week.  They will have a great OFFER on their Fresh Gloucester Old Spot Sausages.  4 large packs for £10.00 approx 4lb in weight and 4 small packs for £5.00 approx 2lb in weight.  Many flavours available including Traditional, Pork & Leek, Pork & Mustard, Cumberland and Spanish Chorizo.  Make room in your freezer and take advantage of this superb offer.  The sausages will freeze really well and will keep for at least 9 months.  Fantastic for the BBQ season.

Joyce Smith of Loddon was our surprised and delighted winner of the FREE Prize Draw at the last market.  A bumper basket of produce - something donated from every stallholder.  She rushed round to the Jubilee Hall to collect her prize.  She was so proud of her winnings that she asked me to print out the photograph of her with her basket of goodies.  No problem at all!!!

Once again it’s time for your Loddon Farmers’ Market. Spring is actually here at last, after a very long and hard winter.  Throw off the winter blues and join us at the market on Saturday 27th April 9.30 – 1pm.  Do your shopping, meet up with friends and family and stop and relax with a great breakfast, or simply a drink and a piece of cake in Roberto’s Cafe – you deserve it.

Firstly, on behalf of Helen and Roberto who are now running the market cafe, weI would like to apologise to customers and stallholders alike, for the somewhat smoky atmosphere in the hall at the last market.  Helen assures us that it will not happen again as it was due to a piece of faulty equipment and Roberto’s cooking isn’t really that bad!  Please come and support the cafe on your visit to the market this week.

The Loddon and District Business Association (L&DBA) will be having a stall for the first time at the market on Saturday.  The association was formed in 2011 to enable businesses in Loddon and the surrounding area to promote their business, work together to improve local prosperity and speak as one voice about business issues. The Association holds regular events to promote Loddon and Chedgrave, including a Scarecrow Festival and a Victorian evening with a Christmas lights competition throughout Loddon and late night shopping. L&DBA will be at the market to promote local businesses – drop by and have a chat with them!

Julie of Plan-to-Cook will be demonstrating two dishes this Saturday - carrot & apricot bites a delicious savoury snack, and healthy fruit, nut & honey bars.  There will be tasters available and the chance to buy both dishes.  There will also be gluten free lemon tarts and gluten free lime & coconut cakes too as well as all the usual Indian and vegetarian food.  we can really recommend the Daal, it’s fantastic.

Tony Portillo’s cheese stall will be coming along to the market once again this week.  There will be an excellent display of tasty, mouth watering cheese from all over the country, including local favourites and cheeses from abroad.  Tony’s wife and daughter will be running the stall this week.  So stop by and say hello and purchase some wonderful cheese, in great condition for the weekend.

Our Community stall this week is - Beccles Air Cadets. They will be promoting 759 (Beccles) Squadron of the Air Cadet Corps, who are a small, but very ambitious group with members from Loddon, Chedgrave & the surrounding villages. Cadets join at the age of 13 and can stay until their 20th birthday, meeting every Friday evening, where a wide range of activities is offered including shooting, drill, sports, ten-pin bowling, archery, climbing and adventure training. In addition, cadets can enter the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and enrol for BTEC qualifications in public services and music.  In this day and age where there is little for the young to focus on, Beccles Air Cadets has a lot to offer.  Make sure you pay them a visit.

We are lucky to be entertained this week at the market by the local band, 9 Out Of 10 Cats ‘unplugged’.  This group is an off-shoot of the 5-piece rock band 9 Out Of 10 Cats. They busk locally, raising money in aid of The Samaritans. They cover songs from the last 5 decades, in particular those with strong vocal harmonies, from the Beatles and Simon and Garfunkel to Jack Johnson and Red Hot Chilli Peppers.  Make sure you give them a great Loddon welcome and dig deep into your pockets and support this fantastic charity.  They will be located in the cafe area.

The Horsman Family of Loddon won the FREE Prize Draw at Saturday 13th April’s market. A bumper basket of produce, kindly donated by each of our stallholders. Dad, John, sent son, Harry round to collect their prize - he's so tall he had to crouch to get into the picture! Don't forget to ‘check in’ at the market each time you attend by showing your card or giving us your number at the desk, for your entry into the weekly draw.  If you’ve registered but do not have a card, please remember to ask for it at the desk.

Welcome once again to your Loddon Farmers’ Market.  A five week month always makes it seem a long time since the last market. However, we are back again this Saturday 13th April 9.30 – 1pm and will be joined by our usual superb line up of stallholders, including some new faces. Giving you the chance to stock up once again on all your favourite meat, fish, vegetables, breads, cakes, pickles, jams, marmalades, beer, wines and more. Also at this market we have a varied selection of craft stalls for you. We look forward to seeing you there.

We are delighted to be welcoming Roberto’s Cafe for the first time at Loddon.  Having lost our lovely Green Apple Cafe ladies to pastures new, we had to find a replacement to run the popular cafe at the Loddon market. Roberto has been running the cafe at Poringland Farmers’ Market for some time now and when we asked if he would like to take on Loddon, he was more than happy to do so.  Robert and his wife Helen will be offering a similar menu with an Italian twist.  Their homemade pizza is legendary.  Please visit the Cafe on Saturday and give Roberto and Helen a great big Loddon welcome.

For those of you who have been eagerly awaiting a good and reliable fish stall at the market, we are delighted to announce that we will be joined by Cookey’s Fish this week.  The stall will be located just inside the market entrance on the left hand side.  Run by John Cook, all of the fish for sale is beautifully presented, sourced locally and is fantastically fresh.  Cookey’s Fish has been at our sister market at Poringland for the last 3 markets and he is already building up a good reputation for selling quality fish. My wife and I have tried the salmon, prawns, haddock and cod and have been delighted at the quality and value for money.  John will prepare the fish to your liking and is very willing to help if you are unsure how to cook something.  Visit John on his stall and take a look for yourself, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.

Another stall attending again this week will be Bitter Sweet Coffee. Along with aromatic coffee, Jodi Abel sells a variety of loose leaf teas, hot choccy spoons and hearts, chocolate buttons and chocolate covered coffee beans and a great selection of chocolate bars, some flavoured with coffee and tea.  It all sounds mouth watering – stop by and see what they have on offer.  Also look out for the wonderful vintage outfit that Jodi is wearing.

Cooks Cakes will also be joining us for the first time. Alison loves cooking and has a sweet tooth so making and baking cakes, cupcakes and tray cakes seemed the ideal thing for her to do. Alison finds extreme pleasure in providing the local community with home baked cakes. Perfect for afternoon tea...perfect for anytime. The cakes she makes range from walnut and banana cakes to cappuccino cakes, classic sponge cakes, muffins of different varieties and cupcakes for all occasions. Along with tray cakes and slices. There appears to be something for everyone. Come along and take a look.

Tony Portillo will be coming along once again this week.  His cheese stall was a great success at the last market.  Tony will be bringing an excellent display of tasty, mouth watering cheese from all over the country, including local favourites and cheeses from abroad. If you missed Tony last time, come and say hello and grab the chance to purchase some fantastic cheese.

Sadly, CoffeeMagic will not be at this market as they have a family wedding, but they assure us that they will be back on the 11th May.

23/03/2013

Well here we are, another 2 weeks into 2013 and on the verge of official Spring time and we have still got the threat of snow!  The poor animals on the farm do not know whether they are coming or going.  Reggie Rooster says he is fed up with getting cold feet and he’s got work to do if we are to have chicks in the Spring!

Hopefully the weather will be fine on Saturday and we can look forward to seeing you all at the market on 23rd March 9.30 – 1pm.  There will be some great stalls this week, including several new ones, and of course our popular Green Apple Cafe will be serving great cooked breakfasts, scones, homemade cakes and drinks as usual.

However, we would like to mention that for the wonderful ladies in the cafe - Sarah, Rachel and Olive - it will be their last appearance at the market.  They have enjoyed looking after you at the market so much that they have decided to open a cafe in Beccles.  We will really miss them but we wish them all the luck in the world and we will keep you informed of their progress.  Don’t worry though, as they are passing the Cafe into good hands.  Roberto and his wife Helen, who currently run the cafe at Poringland Farmers’ Market will be taking over the reins and have promised to keep up the excellent standard to which you have become accustomed, bringing your favourites and others with an Italian twist.

Tony Portillo will be joining us for the first time at the market this week.  Tony will be selling his own recipe, delicious, handmade Pork pies along with Cheese. We have spent a great deal of time and effort trying to find a local producer of cheese to attend the market as we feel it is something that has been missing  – but up to date, we have had no success.  However, we have now been lucky enough to discover Tony, and although not a producer, we think that you will agree, his will be a superb addition to the market.  Tony will be bringing an excellent display of tasty, mouth watering cheese from all over the country, including local favourites and cheeses from abroad. Come and meet Tony at the market and give him a huge Loddon welcome. (Some of you may have already met him in Beccles Street Market on a Friday, he is quite a character).

Another new stallholder joining us this week is, Bitter Sweet Coffee. I absolutely adore the smell of freshly ground and brewed coffee and I cannot wait to try what they will have on offer. Along with coffee they supply a variety of loose leaf teas, hot choccy spoons and hearts, chocolate buttons and chocolate covered coffee beans and chocolate bars.  It all sounds mouth watering – stop by and see what’s on offer.

We are also pleased to have a new producer selling vegetarian goodies at the market.  Come and visit Vette’s Veggie Van’s stall where Yvette will have vegetable patties, vegetarian sausage rolls, dahl and curry on offer to tempt you.

We also have a few craft stalls joining us this week, including Trakyapot, who will be selling traditional cooking pots at the market for the first time. So if you are short of a gift or would like greetings cards for Easter, then look no further.

Our recipe for you this week is a twist on an old favourite – Cottage Pie. A hearty warming meal on a cold and wet day: Buckenham Farms Luxury Minced Beef and Potato Pie (Serves 6 good helpings)
Ingredients
2lbs Aberdeen Angus Minced Beef (Buckenham Farms)
3 Med sized onions (Clinks Farm)
Few drops of olive oil or sunflower oil
Tbsp Good quality Onion based Chutney (Candi’s Chutneys)
 2 Tbsp Tomato Puree
Tbsp Worcester sauce
Pinch Italian Herbs or mixed herbs
Salt & Black pepper to taste
Tbsp Bisto Gravy powder
Tbsp Cornflour
1 Beef stock pot sachet (either Knorr or Bisto)
1 1/2lbs Potatoes for mashing (Clinks Farm)
1 oz Butter & few drops of milk
4 oz Grated Mature Cheddar Cheese (Tony’s cheese stall)

Method
Put minced beef in a pan and cover with cold water and add salt, pepper and herbs.  Bring to the boil and simmer for 40 mins. Peel potatoes and cut into bite size chunks and, cover with water and add a little salt and cook well for at least 20 mins until potatoes are soft enough to mash.  Mash until light and fluffy, adding butter and a little milk.

Peel and dice onion, into small pieces.  Heat oil in a small saucepan and lightly fry onions until soft, no need to brown them.  Add the cooked onion, chutney, tomato puree and Worcester sauce to the cooked minced beef. Pre- heat over to 180c. Mix Bisto and Cornflour with a little water and then also gradually stir into the minced beef to thicken along with the stock pot sachet.  Return to the cooker and simmer for 15 mins.

Remove from the heat and put into a heatproof dish big enough to give you equal proportions of meat and potato topping without bursting over the edge.  Leave for 15 mins to set slightly on top. Now spread mashed potato over the meat.  Cover with grated cheese and put in the oven for 20 mins or until the cheese has melted and begun to brown.

Another 2 weeks have quickly passed by and here we are looking forward to another Farmers Market.  Each market seems to get bigger and better and as a result our fortnightly FREE Prize Draw also gets bigger.  Filled with wonderful produce which is donated by each of our stallholders attending the market, it gives them a chance to ‘show off’ their produce and the winner an opportunity to try things they may otherwise not give a second glance.

Recently a prize winner informed Sharon of Buckenham Farms that she had not previously liked pork chops, in fact she didn’t really eat pork at all, but after trying the ones in her winning basket – she would be back for more!  If you would like a chance to win, make sure that you register at the desk each time you attend the market – remembering to collect your loyalty card if you haven’t done so already.  The winning numbers are randomly generated, so if you attend the market this week you could be the lucky winner on Saturday 9th March 9.30 – 1pm.

Mrs Smith of Hales was very happy to win the FREE Prize Draw at our last market - a basket full of mouth watering, tasty local produce - something from every stallholder.

With the 2013 lambing season upon us, most of the lamb available from good butchers is now’ Old Season Lamb’ or ‘Hogget’.  You may ask 'what is hogget ?'. Well it is over-wintered lamb between about 12 and 18 months old.  New Season lamb is between 6 and 12 months old and slaughtered in the year of its birth.  Once it is over 12 months old it is known as Hogget and once it reaches 2 yrs and above it is Mutton.  Have you ever asked in your supermarket whether the lamb is New Season or Old Season? I wonder if they even know?  Try it next time you visit the meat counter and see what they say.  We would be very interested to know how they reply.

Hogget is the real connoisseur’s choice of sheep meats as it is tender, rich in flavour and with a firm texture. There's not much of it around – as commercial farms find it too costly and too much trouble to keep. However, at Buckenham Farms, they reckon it's well worth it. Hung to perfection, it will be available from them from March onwards and they don’t charge anymore for it!  Please try some today, they’re sure that you won’t be disappointed.

Recipe for Roast Hogget
Ingredients
Whole or boned and rolled leg or shoulder of hogget
1 tbsp olive oil
Small bunch of rosemary , broken into sprigs
3 garlic cloves , thinly sliced
4 anchovies , broken into small pieces (optional)
Method
Heat oven 220C/200C fan/gas 7. Weigh the meat (if you don't know the weight already) and calculate the cooking time: 15 mins per 450g for rare, 20 mins for medium and 25 mins for well-done.
Place the meat in a roasting tin, rub all over with the oil and season generously with salt and pepper. Use the tip of a sharp knife to make incisions all over the joint, then in each one insert sprigs of rosemary with a sliver of garlic and piece of anchovy, if using.
Put the meat in the oven for 10 mins, then turn down to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Now roast for your calculated time, basting the meat occasionally with any pan juices. Remove from the oven and rest the joint for at least 15 mins before carving.  Serve with roast potatoes and fresh vegetables

Reno Wine joins us this week and now stocks about 8 wines from producers in Southern France and Central Italy in their eco-friendly returnable glass bottles. Each empty Reno bottle has a £2 exchange value against your next bottle giving an opportunity to save money at the same time as reducing waste, saving resources and using less energy. In response to very keen interest in Organic Wines, they have been trialling a very popular organic white from the Veneto region of Italy and, for the first time on Saturday 9th March, this will be joined by their first Organic red, a lightly oaked Merlot, from the same producer. Both organic wines retail at £8.99 (£6.99 refill price).

In addition, Reno Wine will have some special deals for Loddon Farmers’ Market customers. For March, they’re pleased to offer some red wine discounts with a half case (2 bottles Cabernet Sauvignon, 2 bottles Corbieres Reserve, 2 bottles Number Eight Cuvee) for £45 (normal full price is £55.94) or half case of Number Eight Cuvee for £54 (normal full price is £71.94). They cannot accept empty bottles exchanged against these special deal prices but the special deal bottles when empty can be exchanged against normal prices!  The Reno Wine stall usually stocks some wine accessories and, this month, they’ll have some fantastic wine cooling sleeves made by Le Creuset – keep them in the freezer then place them over your white wine to fast chill in 10 minutes – durable and reusable. Usually £12 but for March retailing at £10. Great gift or treat for yourself.

We have a terrific line up of stalls for you this week including a large section ofl craft stalls and don’t forget to visit the Green Apple Cafe for a delicious breakfast or simply a warming drink and a delicious piece of cake or one of Sarah’s legendary cheese scones.

Well, the weather certainly seems to be cheering up and hopefully we have seen the last of the snow.  The birds are singing, and the snowdrops are appearing in the gardens and soon it will be the turn of the crocus and daffodils to show their faces.  Spring is definitely just around the corner and Loddon Farmers’ Market looks forward to welcoming our customers, new and old. Especially those of you that we haven’t seen for some time, whilst the weather has been so cold and wet. A great market awaits you and we have over 20 tempting stalls of food and drink, so why not come along and see us on 23rd February 9.30 – 1pm.

The horsemeat saga continues.  Every day we are being told about another product that contains it.  Not only is it in a considerable number of ready meals, often produced by well known companies and available in our supermarkets, it has now been found in school meals and hospital food.  It isn’t that horse meat is unsafe to eat, indeed it is considered a delicacy in many countries, but it’s the fact that we cannot trust our food labelling in this country any more.  How long have there been ‘unknown’ ingredients in our meals, and what else lurks beneath the packaging, nobody seems to know.  One thing is for sure, if ‘cheap’ is what you want, then ‘cheap’ is what you are likely to get.  The supermarkets may be selling a cheap meal for 99p but they would have paid less than 49p for it to be made.  Think about it, could you produce a healthy meal for one using only good quality ingredients for 49p plus the cost of packaging?  It makes you think doesn’t it?

On the other hand at your local Farmers’ Market, all the produce that you will buy is good quality, and fully traceable.  The producers are the actual people selling you their produce.  Whether it is meat, fish, vegetables, bread, home cooked bakes or prepared foods, each stallholder can talk to you about the origins of their produce or the ingredients that they use.  Farmers’ Markets have been traditionally considered to be an expensive place to buy your produce, but if you look around I am sure that you will agree that it isn’t always the case and you certainly get value for money.

If you fancy cooking a nice hearty meal this week, then this recipe, sent in by Benita Smith, might be of interest and you can buy most of the ingredients at Loddon Farmers’ Market.

Pork steaks in Cider
Half pint sweet cider (East Norfolk Trading Co)
4 boneless Pork steaks (D J Barnard or Buckenham Farms)
8-10 mushrooms (Clinks Farm)
1 large cooking apple (Clinks Farm)
1 pt chicken stock
1 tbsp flour mixed to a paste with water
2 tbsp breadcrumbs
2oz Mature cheddar

Pre-heat oven to 180C. Place prepared vegetables and apple in a casserole dish and lay pork on top and pour over the cider. Cover with a lid and place in the oven and cook until veg and pork are tender, about 1 hr. Remove from the oven and mix in chicken stock and thicken with flour if necessary. Mix the breadcrumbs and cheese together and sprinkle over the top. Return to the oven and bake until crisp on top.

We have a new stallholder, Bridget, at the next market with her fabulous range of puddings. At Pudding ˈpʊdɪŋ’, they make very special, luxurious puddings from the best local ingredients, cooked in wooden cases which can go straight into the oven to be reheated.  Their current selection includes delicious Brioche Bread and Butter pudding with golden sultanas, Pear and Apple Crumble, Gooey Chocolate Pudding, and Treacle Sponge. Keep a look out for their new flavours as Spring arrives, but meanwhile visit their stall and have a taste, they sound divine! Becks Sweets will also be joining us for the first time at Loddon.  They will be selling a selection of old fashioned sweets, displayed in jars and weighed to your requirement. Along with many other old favourites.  My wife purchased some old fashioned liquorice sticks with sherbet inside at the last Poringland market and she said that it made her “feel like a child again”.

Marsh Pig will be back again after a short break, with their wonderful array of tasty chorizo.  Made with Blythburgh Pork, they know exactly where their ingredients are from!

Julie from Plan to Cook will be with us at Saturday’s market.  She will be demonstrating two dishes, luscious lemon pudding - a tangy light airy dessert, and warming vegetable minestrone soup - a great lunch dish for this time of year using winter vegetables.  Both dishes will be available for sale and of course tasting following the demonstration.  Also available to buy will be her usual favourites - vegetarian sausages, daal, keema,  lentil bakes and fruit crumbles.  With all the issues with processed food at the moment, it's a great opportunity to take advantage of some home cooking.

BusiBeni Crafts now have a selection of handmade cards for sale along with the beautiful bags, mobile phone and glasses covers, pillows and lots more great gift ideas.

Anne Cornwall of Loddon was delighted to win the FREE Prize Draw at the market on 9th February, a superb basket full of produce - something from every stallholder....she wrote in an e-mail - "Just wanted to say a big ‘Thank You’. What a lovely surprise to win the hamper. It will be nice to try some things that I haven't bought before at the market. Thank you to all the stall holders for donating their produce. A good market, yesterday. Thank you once again!"  It could be your turn to win this week so make sure that you register at the desk when you arrive at the market.

It’s February already and we are looking forward to the first Loddon market of the month.  Hopefully the weather will be kinder to us all, and we will see more of you at this weeks’ market.  We have got a great line up of stalls for you this time and we will be welcoming back favourite stalls such as Opa Hay’s Brewery, Evergreens Family Garden Centre,  Norfolk & Suffolk Speciality Foods and Jamaroc Catering - all of whom had a well deserved break in January.  Remember you can get a great breakfast or snack at the Green Apple Market Cafe, so why not take a break from your shopping and maybe, at the same time, catch up with friends that you haven’t seen during the bad weather.

If you enjoy cooking with local ingredients, then you can’t beat shopping at your local Farmers’ Market, where everything is fresh and everything is local. For all of your meat requirements, you have Buckenham Farms from Gillingham who pride themselves in producing good quality meat as affordable prices. Their animals are all home bred and home reared in and around Gillingham and Haddiscoe. All of their animals are grass fed and are not routinely treated with antibiotics. All meat is prepared and packed at local butchers in Bungay and labelled by John and Sharon ready for the market on a Saturday morning.  They use only the best meat for their sausages and burgers and say that “everything the supermarkets put in, we leave out”.

Excellent meat can also be purchased from local producer D J Barnard Meats, who specialise in beef but also have a great show of other meats too.  They also pride themselves on the consistent quality of their meat and value for money. Fresh fruit and vegetables are brought to the market by Clinks Care Farm.  A great deal of their produce is grown on their farm at Toft Monks and is picked either the day before or morning of the market.  You can’t get fresher than that!

Freshly baked bread is available at the market from Tudor Bakehouse. All of the breads and foods that they sell are freshly baked and prepared on site at their bakeries in Eye or Diss using the best ingredients and local produce and brought to the market fresh. If it’s fresh fish that you want then you must visit Ocean Fresh.  Their van is located just outside the main entrance of the market.  Choose from a great selection of fresh, locally caught fish.  Fish is always at its best fresh!

For all your seasoning needs, why not visit Rashid at Jamaroc Catering, who has spices to delight every palate and is always willing to share his knowledge of what works best. Homebird Bakes will be at the market with fantastic homemade pasties (a real favourite), cheese straws, scotch eggs, sweet and savoury pies and more.

For Goodness Cake will also be with us with their usual display of great tasting homemade cakes and slices.  Great for an occasion or just simply sitting down with a cuppa and a piece of cake! Why not pick up some freshly ground coffee from CoffeeMagic to go with your purchases.

If you prefer something a little stronger we have East Norfolk Trading Co supplying their great range of locally produced ciders and apple juice.  Both of which I can highly recommend! Or if your tipple is beer then visit Opa Hay’s Brewery stall and sample some real local beer.  Or may you would prefer a glass of wine, in which case visit Reno Wine where you can sample some great red and white wines before buying.  All of their wines are supplied in returnable bottles too.

Look out for lovely homemade fudge from Ailsa’s Country Cream Fudge, plants and herbs from Evergreens Family Garden Centre, fresh free range eggs from H&R Kingery,  pickles & chutneys from Norfolk & Suffolk Speciality Foods, delicious chocolate from Norfolk Chocolate Company and supplies for your feathered and furred friends from Wildlife & Domestic Supplies. If anyone has any recipes, using produce sourced at the market, please send them to us as we would love to include them in a newsletter.

Go on, buy local, you know it makes sense!

As Valentine’s Day, 14th February, is nearly here, we thought we would include a few craft stalls at this market in case any of you romantics out there would like to buy a card or a present for your loved one!  These include BusiBeni Crafts, Handmade Cards by Dawn, Phoenix Trading and John Crown’s Antiques.  John, (whom you are more likely to have seen serving on Buckenham Farms stall) is a local farmer who in his semi-retirement has taken an interest in buying, renovating and selling local antiques.  There are always lots of interesting items on his stall, all of which would make a perfect gift.

Loddon & District History Group

You may remember that, in 2012, the Loddon History Group, with the help of the Norfolk Community Archaeologists, began a project called The Loddon Parish Study.  This included a series of test pits through the centre of the village.  The findings from these pits were very interesting and extended knowledge of Loddon’s past.  As the local interest was so great,  they applied for, and have been granted, a heritage Lottery Fund Award to further their  research.  This is to be a three year project and will include all aspects of Loddon’s history whether written, in the standing buildings or under the ground.  If you are interested in finding out more,  come see their display at the market on Saturday!!

Stacey Taylor of Loddon was the delighted winner of the Free Prize draw at the last market.  She kindly wrote “I would like to thank Loddon Farmers Market for the lovely basket of local produce I won in the free prize draw at today’s market. Absolutely fabulous - I am looking forward to tucking in! Thank you! x"  It is always nice when the customer appreciates winning, especially as all of the produce is donated free by our stallholders.  Don't forget to register at the desk when you arrive at the market for your chance to win a similar selection of local produce in our FREE PRIZE DRAW - our next market is on Saturday 9th February.

26/01/2013

Despite the cold wintry weather, Loddon Farmers’ Market will be going ahead as usual this Saturday 26th January 9.30 – 1pm.  However cold and bad it gets, we still need to eat and our stallholders realise this and will do their very best to bring you all your essentials and much more.  Despite the terrible weather last Saturday a few of our stallholders made it to our sister market at Poringland, and were delighted at the amazing turnout from our customers.  It seemed that they wouldn’t be beaten and many put on their walking boots and thermals and walked to the market. There was a real sense of community spirit which was great.  Maybe you will feel the same. If you are close by, go on, wrap up warm, put sensible boots or shoes on and walk safely to the market.

Once at the market you can ‘Shake up your wakeup’ at the Green Apple Cafe. This week 20th – 26th January is Farmhouse Breakfast Week which is being celebrated and promoted all across the country.  Farmhouse Breakfast Week is an annual celebration championing the importance of breakfast which aims to get the nation to Shake Up Their Wake Up! 47% of people regularly skip breakfast during the week so our aim is to encourage people to enjoy a healthy breakfast more regularly. Managed by HGCA, the campaign started in 2000 and takes place every January. It is more successful each year with over 1,000 events and promotions taking place in 2012 alongside extensive media coverage.

Farmhouse Breakfast Week is run on behalf of arable farmers who grow crops such as wheat, barley, oats and oilseed rape. The purpose of the campaign is to raise awareness of the benefits of eating a healthy breakfast and demonstrate the wealth of wonderful breakfast produce available around the country. At the market our Green Apple cafe are doing their bit to promote the benefits of a great start to the day with a hearty breakfast and will be giving away a FREE hot or cold drink with every full breakfast purchased.

Where possible produce for the breakfasts are sourced fresh from the market on the day, which includes –

2 Traditional pork sausages from Buckenham Farms
2 rashers of Smoked bacon from D J Barnard Meats
Fresh eggs from H. & R. Kingery
Bread from Tudor Bakehouse
Baked beans and mushrooms

Enjoy a traditional English Breakfast using the very best of East Anglian produce.

The breakfast's are excellent, freshly cooked and reasonably priced and have become a regular feature for some of our market shoppers, one couple recently said "we always look forward to our little treat at the market!”  Go on treat yourself and order a healthy, hearty breakfast, so much easier than cooking at home and you can do your shopping at the same time.

Check out the chalk boards for the full selection available from the "cafe" including a Homemade Soup of the day and Sarah's fabulous freshly baked scones....which one is your favourite?

When you only have time for a slice of toast in the mornings, what better way to eat it than with some wonderful, tasty homemade marmalade.  Make sure you visit Seasons Bounty who will have a superb assortment of local homemade marmalades on her stall this Saturday.

Loddon Young Farmers will be having a Community Stall at the market this week to promote their club.  They meet every Monday night at The Angel Pub in Loddon, meetings start at 8pm.  They are a small but very active club of about fifteen regular members, with number increasing all the time.  Loddon is one of the youngest clubs in Norfolk with the oldest member being just 24 years old!  Although they are a small club they have a huge spirit and are always present at local events. They have lots of exciting meetings coming up this year, including a visit from the Dogs Trust and the Air Ambulance.  They will be holding their annual casino night on Saturday 30th March. Last year was a great success and they have high hopes for the same this year. 12/01/2013

Welcome to the first Newsletter of 2013.  May we take this opportunity to wish all our customers a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year and we hope that we see you as often as possible during the coming year.

Thanks to your continued support the market is now well established, and we believe that the market newsletter is a superb place to advertise businesses in and around the Loddon area, and we are eager to support local businesses.  So if you are a patron of the market, and would like to use this letter to advertise or promote your local business please contact me on the number at the bottom of this letter and we can discuss your requirements.  Alternatively you may like to have a ‘guest’ stall at the market. With several hundred people visiting the market each time, it’s a great way to showcase your business.

Our next market is on Saturday 12th January 9.30 – 1pm and we will be welcoming a new stallholder to the market, Jenny Beaumont's Cakes.  In Jenny’s words "I make really lovely cakes that you can afford, they are made at my home with high quality ingredients. I have been making cakes for friends and family as a treat and now I'm making them for you."  Jenny made her debut last week at Poringland market and sold out!! Make sure you visit Jenny on her stall and give her a big Loddon welcome.

Buckenham Farms will be having a January SALE of their Whole Hog Fresh Sausages at this coming market.  Using only the finest cuts of meat (and leaving out most of what the supermarkets put in). Many different flavours including gluten free, will be available at 4 large packs for £10.00 and 4 small packs for £5.00.  This will be a substantial saving over the normal price and will not be repeated.  So get in quick, now that your freezers are empty, take the opportunity of filling them once again with superb quality sausages at ridiculous prices.  The sausages will keep perfectly well in a freezer for at least 9 months.

Julie from ‘Plan to Cook’ will be at the market this week, and will be demonstrating how to make Feta, sundried tomato and olive scones and lentil bake. With all the sweet treats at Christmas and New Year Julie felt that these tasty savouries would be a welcome change.  Both will be for sale on her stall as well as the delicious usual things like samosas. If you feel that this year is the time to learn new dishes and cookery skills, book a cookery course with ‘Plan to Cook’ and get 20% discount if you book on the day.

Russell Watson of East Norfolk Trading Company did not think that he would be able to make this coming market but we are delighted to announce that he will be able to come and will have his excellent local ciders and apple juice for sale.

Gwynne will be having a charity stall at the market this week to fundraise for a trip in early February to join the Raleigh Tanzanian project. Gwynne has already completed a sponsored cycle ride of 40 miles from Bungay to Southwold, to raise funds. In Tanzania he will be helping to make a genuine difference to rural communities as well as protecting its unique environmental heritage. The Raleigh project hope to achieve this by, improving access to water, sanitation, alternative energy, assisting with environmental protection and management, and education through starting the building of a new school. This expedition is directly related to Gwynne’s degree course, Wildlife Conservation, which she will be starting in the new academic year at the University of Kent. We wish her the best of luck and hope that you will support her well.

The lucky prize winner of the Christmas bumper FREE Prize Draw raffle at the market on 22nd December was Alison Edwards of Loddon who was really surprised to have won. She wasn’t able to come back to the Jubilee Hall to collect her winnings as she was feeding her baby but was ‘over the moon with her early Christmas present’ which was delivered to her by Santa’s little elves from the market.

All of the tasty goods contained in the raffle prize are donated by our stallholders.  This gives them a chance to let you try their produce and if you enjoy it, hopefully return to their stalls in the future. Please ensure that you show your loyalty card or give your name to the person at the table just inside the market door each time that you come to the market. You will then be included in this weeks’ draw for your chance to win. If you have not collected your card please ask for it.  What have you got to lose, it’s free!!

Please find below this weeks’ recipe

Sausage meat Garland

Ingredients
1 lb Good quality Sausage meat
1 Large red onion
1 chopped red eating apple (skin on)
1 cup of red wine
1 egg to bind
Little fresh or dried Thyme (optional)
Small packet of Sage & Onion stuffing mix
Dessert spoon of tomato puree
Salt & black pepper
Fresh Rosemary (optional)
Cherry tomatoes

For the pastry ( or 1 pack ready made shortcrust)

1lb Plain flour
Little water
Pinch of salt
4oz lard
40z of butter
Little milk

You will need Baking sheet lined with non stick paper (greaseproof)

Method
Pre-heat oven to 170C.
Gently fry chopped onion and apple with a little butter until soft and add thyme when soft. Add red wine and simmer until reduced and set aside to cool. When cold add sausage meat and combine well with egg, stuffing mix and tomato puree. Season well with salt and pepper.

Make pastry by rubbing the butter and lard into the flour with your fingers and add gradually until the mixture binds together and is not too sticky. Roll pasty out into an oblong shape roughly 30” long x 6” wide on a well floured surface.

Place pastry on baking sheet and spoon sausage meat mixture down the middle evenly in an arch shape. Cut strips down three quarters of the way on each side in and fold across mixture in a plait pattern. Gently shape completed plait into a round garland shape, taking care not to break and seal the ends, pressing firmly together. Brush gently with milk or a little beaten egg and decorate with rosemary and small pieces of cherry tomato.

Place in middle to top of the oven for roughly 50 mins.  Keep checking to ensure that it does not burn.  When cooked cool, but while slightly warm run pallet knife under garland gently to remove.

08/12/2012

Welcome once again to the Loddon Farmers’ Market newsletter.  We are delighted to say that, yet again, we have broken all records and the last market was once again the busiest to date.  Well done to all our great stallholders and thanks to each and every one of our customers for your continued support.  Our aim is to make this market one of the best in East Anglia and really put Loddon on the map!  Don’t miss our next market on Saturday 8th December 9.30 – 1pm.

We have two great new stalls joining us at this market, just in time for Christmas - Ailsa's Country Cream Fudge and Paula’s Amazing Cookies.  Look out for the wonderful and delicious, naughty but nice treats on offer and give both ladies a big Loddon welcome.

Some of our stallholders have become famous! Did you see our very own Tudor Bakehouse on ITV this week? They featured in the East Anglian region of ‘Britains Best Bakery’ currently showing daily at 4pm.  Take a look at this link to catch them in action. http://www.itv.com/itvplayer/video/?Filter=328336

Also, Bob and Helen Kingery of Beccles, our regular egg suppliers to the market, recently received an important award. They were honoured with the BFREPA/Elanco Egg Producer of the Year Award by the British Free Range Egg Producers' Association (BFREPA) and were described as the "perfect" producers by John Bowler, founder and chairman of the John Bowler Group.  At Loddon Farmers' Market, the Kingery Family sell their truly free-range eggs at a fraction of the price of Supermarket eggs.  They are sold in boxes or trays and can be mixed sized, large or even super-size. As with all the produce at our market, the food is fresher, the chain is shorter and the foot-print lighter.  What more could you ask for?

Smudge’s Norfolk Honey will be at the market for the last time for a little while.  The season for honey has been an incredibly challenging  one for the producers this year - the weather being a huge contributing factor.  If you want to buy good honey that you know is fresh and local then this will be your last chance for a while.  So stop by and get yourself a jar.  Especially with all the winter chills that are about.  Honey has many medicinal properties and is one of mother nature’s finest foods. My mother swore by hot lemon and honey for calming a sore throat and with an addition of whisky makes a great hot toddy!  Just add boiling water to half a squeezed lemon and a teaspoon of honey.

Clinks Care Farm will be bringing a good selection of seasonal produce to the market this week including potatoes, celeriac, turnips, parsnips, sprouts, cabbages and cauliflowers. It is also a great chance to place your Christmas vegetable order with them which can then be collected from the Farmer's Market on Sat 22nd December. Potted hyacinths are also on offer to make an ideal Christmas gift.

We have a great charity stall coming along to this market:  Chris Crease writes...Do you remember Monica Mouse, who helped raise money for the Tsunami Appeal in 2005?  Well she's back, with her friends, to support Calcutta Rescue, a charity running health clinics for the street people of Calcutta, some of the poorest and most deprived in the world.  Two little books with all five Monica stories for you to buy for Christmas.  Only £5 each with all profits to the charity.  Christmas is a time for thinking of those less well off than ourselves, so dig deep in your pockets and help this great charity.

Featured in the craft section will be Just Elephants, who are new to the market.  They will be selling elephant themed items of all descriptions and look out for John Crown’s Antiques, who will be selling silver-plated items at reasonable prices, some of which would make fantastic gifts for Christmas.  Always a favourite, Benita of BusiBeni Crafts will have assorted adult & childrens bags, baby bibs, cushions, lavender bags, spectacle cases, phone holders, framed pictures, gift boxes etc....always fantastic value.

Gilly Parsons of Chedgrave, a regular visitor to the market, was delighted to win the last markets FREE Prize Draw.  The prize basket was absolutely brimming over with superb produce - something donated from every stallholder. Gilly rushed round to collect her winnings and subsequently wrote the following e-mail “Thank you to everyone at Loddon for my lovely basket of goodies. It was such a lovely surprise to win especially at my favourite farmers market in my own village!!” Don't forget to register as you enter the market each time, for your chance to win such a superb selection of local produce.

24/11/2012
Loddon Farmers Market is pleased to say that, thanks to everyone that came along and supported the market, our last market was one of the best markets to date.  This coming Saturday’s market on 24th November 9.30 – 1pm promises to be a great market too. With lots of great food and drink producers attending along with some excellent craft stalls.

We have more new stalls attending the market, one of which is Ash Tree Farm Meats, based in Pulham St.Mary, near Diss.  They produce premium Boer goat meat and rare breed pork from Oxford Sandy and Black pigs either, fresh or as Salami / Chorizo.  They will be bringing their fresh goat meat to this market and possibly salami and chorizo in the New Year.   We also have Evergreens which is a family run and owned garden centre based south of Beccles. They will be bringing along a selection of quality own grown plants, including shrubs, perennials, trees, herbs and grasses. All grown from seed, cuttings, plugs or small liners. Usually varieties you wouldn’t find in other garden centres. They hope you will enjoy what they have to offer.  If there is anything that you would like to know about the produce that they have on offer, simply ask.

Madame Deroubaix will be joining us for the first time too.  Providing an opportunity to buy some of the most interesting and ethical chocolate in the world? An array of quality chocolate products sourced and brought to Norfolk in the form of a travelling chocolate boutique. From Bean to Bar Single Origin Bars, Sea Salt Caramels to the best Organic Hot Chocolate.  Madame Deroubaix believes that the quality of the cocoa bean, the manufacturing process, the welfare of the farmers & care for the environment all goes towards making the most tastiest and fulfilling chocolate experience you will have.

Featured in the craft section will be Bunting Birds, which was formed earlier this year by friends Helen and Liz.  They use contemporary and recycled fabrics to produce bunting and other gifts at very reasonable prices. In addition to their current stock, they take bunting orders for Weddings, Christenings, Baby showers and more. They are currently producing exciting Christmas gifts and stocking fillers, such as lavender or cinnamon filled hearts, embellished handtowels and facecloths, covered diaries, and Christmas Cards. Everything is handmade and they aim to please. They personalise bunting on request, whether it be a newborn baby’s name, a football team (great gift idea for a boys bedroom!) or the name of a business. Their Christmas themed bunting is proving popular, particularly incorporating their gingerbread men! Prices for bunting begin at a reasonable £4.99. This is the last appearance Bunting Birds will be making at Loddon Farmers Market before Christmas, so do pop along and bag a gift for you and your loved ones!

The Loddon  WI will have a Community Stall to showcase their activities and the wares from their members.

A recipe this week for all the vegetarians out there:

Tomato Baked Eggs

900g/2lb Ripe Tomatoes (vine if possible)
3 Garlic cloves, thinly sliced
3 tbsp Olive oil
4 large Free-range eggs
2 tbsp chopped parsley and/or chives
Toast or ciabatta and green salad to serve

Preheat the oven to 200oC/Gas 6/fan oven 180oC.  Cut the tomatoes into quarters or thick wedges, depending on their size, then spread them over the base of a fairly shallow, large, ovenproof dish.  Sprinkle the garlic over the tomatoes, drizzle with the oil and season well.  Stir until the tomatoes are glistening, the bake for 40 minutes until softened and tinged with brown.

Make 4 gaps among the tomatoes, break an egg into each gap and cover the dish with foil.  Return the dish to the oven for 5-10 minutes until the eggs are set to your liking.  Scatter over the herbs and serve piping hot, with thick slices of toast or warm ciabatta and a green salad on the side.

The lucky winners of the last Loddon Farmers’ Market FREE Prize Draw were Mr & Mrs Crease of Chedgrave.  They were delighted to win a huge basket full of produce - a contribution made from every produce stallholder attending the market. Don't forget to register/sign in at the market for your chance to win this superb selection of local produce.  We have lost count of the amount of people that have said “we never win anything” and they do! Just proving that you have to be in it, to win it!

10/11/2012
Hello, once again from Loddon Farmers’ Market.  We look forward to welcoming you to the market on Saturday.  The market promises to have a great atmosphere and will be well attended by stallholders with 22 stalls of food and drink to tantalise your taste buds and 16 craft stalls offering wonderful and exciting items for your Christmas stocking fillers!  Let’s hope lots of you come to the market and continue to make it one of the best in East Anglia.  Not so many people turned out for the last market, which was not surprising, given the ghastly weather, so we hope that the sun will be shining this weekend.  The next Loddon market is on Saturday 10th November 9.30 – 1pm.

I hate to remind you, but Christmas is now only about 6 weeks away and there will only be another 4 markets before the big day.  So to spread the cost of the festive season, why not start to purchase your pickles, chutneys, sauces, coffee and other ambient products from the market. Remember also to place your orders for meat, especially gammon, chipolatas and bacon and eggs, cheese, pies, soups, cakes and bread from your favourite producers so that they can have them ready for you to collect at the market on December 22nd.  All of our producers welcome orders as it allows them to provide exactly what you want.  If you can’t see what you want, then just ask.  Knowing that you have placed your orders in advance will make your Christmas festivities so much easier.  Look out for The Tudor Bakehouse on Britain’s Best Bakery Show, showing on ITV in November.

Seasonal vegetables are so important and we thought that you’d like to know in advance what Clinks Care Farm will be bringing to the market on Saturday – they will have Red Potatoes in 2.5kg bags, Celery, Beetroot, Onions, Parsnips, Turnips, Curly Kale, Cabbages, Celeriac, Parsley plants, Winter lettuce plants - for planting on in raised beds or polytunels and maybe will be able to bring the first of their stew/casserole bags on Saturday, but that’s not yet confirmed.

Our featured stallholder this week is For Goodness Cake - who started their business in June of this year with the aim of producing a consistently high product range of cakes and slices. They use fresh local ingredients where possible and always make their cakes using freshly laid eggs from their family chickens. Jonathan had always had a keen interest in local produce and farmers markets and Joanna enjoyed baking and it seemed natural to bring the two interests together into something that the whole family could get involved in. Ben and Lucy accompany Jonathan to ‘help’ on market day whilst the baking is down to Joanna.

Always keen to please, they encourage their customers to tell them what cakes they would like to see on their stall. They want to appeal to a wide range of customers, so their products range from traditional Norfolk Shortcake, which they’ve been told brings back ’memories of baking with Gran’ for many of their customers, to the less well known, like white chocolate and cherry loaf which "flew off the shelf" when it was introduced at Loddon. Their most popular offering however is still Bakewell cake which features the traditional Bakewell flavourings in a cake and is currently made using freshly picked local raspberries.  Other specialities include orange and chocolate loaves, "no added sugar" fruit loaf, chocolate and hazelnut brownies and caramel slices. Samples are always available to try. All cakes are freshly prepared the day before market. Order before the market by contacting Joanna on 07855 281495. Orders must be placed by the Thursday prior to the market on Saturday. Orders can be collected at the market or delivered to the door. Gluten free products are also available to order.  For Goodness Cake will now be joining us for both Saturday markets at Loddon.

You can also purchase unusual presents at the market from our wonderful array of craft stalls. Look out for Easterncraftsandseaglass. Where you can find unique pieces of hand crafted jewellery.  Many of the pieces are made out of reclaimed glass that has been washed up on local beaches which means that no two pieces are alike.  They also craft lovely oak walking sticks which can be personalised with your name or anything that you like.  My wife recently purchased one for herself and one for a friend and had the names of all of her dogs engraved on the stick.  A totally unique and very personal present, at a very reasonable price.  Mrs. Harvey will be selling knitted socks and hats. Get prepared for the chilly winter days ahead. Pebbles Pets will be joining us once more and the beautiful painted stones that she produces have been a real success at the market.  Stop by and have a real good look at the craft stalls, you never know what you might find and our enthusiastic stallholders are always willing to talk to you about their products. There is no charge for looking!

This week’s recipe is for Beef and Bean Hotpot
(a brilliant way of stretching a couple of packets of mince)
Ingredients
750g/1lb 10oz Lean minced beef
1 beef stock cube
2 large onions, roughly chopped
450g/1lb carrots, peeled and thickly sliced
1.2kg/2lb 8oz potatoes, peeled and cut into large chunks
2 x 400g cans baked beans
Worcestershire sauce or Tabasco, to taste
Large handful of parsley, roughly chopped
Method
Heat a large non-stick pan, add the beef and fry over a medium-high heat until browned, stirring often and breaking up any lumps with a spoon.  Crumble in the stock cube and mix well. Add the vegetables, stir to mix with the beef and pour in enough boiling water (about
1.2litres/2 pints) to cover.  Bring to the boil, then lower the heat and stir well.  Cover the pan and simmer gently for about 30 minutes or until the vegetables are tender. Tip in the Baked beans, sprinkle with Worcestershire sauce or Tabasco to taste, stir well and heat through.  Taste for seasoning and sprinkle with the parsley.  Serve with extra Worcestershire sauce or Tabasco for those who like a peppery hot taste.

27/10/2012

The last Loddon Farmers’ Market was one of the busiest and most successful markets so far, thanks to you, our loyal customers.  We also had 22 new family groups register which is fantastic and we would like to say a big welcome to you and hope that you enjoyed the market and will continue to attend.  It’s seems there are still a lot of people out there that do not know about the market, so please keep spreading the word! The market had a wonderful atmosphere with lots of enthusiasm from our stallholders, all of whom appreciate your continued support. We now have superb and varied selection of produce being sold at the market and this will continue so long as you keep visiting the market and encouraging our producers to keep coming.  Our excellent café also did very well, with lots of tasty breakfasts being prepared for our customers and Buckenham Farms found it hard to keep up with their requests for sausages!!!  Our next market is on Saturday 27th October 9.30 – 1pm.  We hope to be able to welcome you one again.

We will be welcoming, for the first time, Lou of That’s Crafty!! – she will be bringing cakes with no gluten containing ingredients, including Halloween cupcakes, yum!

A local Community Transport organisation will be at the Farmers' Market on 27th Oct to talk to as many people as possible about their transport needs.  They are currently considering putting in a bid for lottery funding to run a demand responsive service in the area of Loddon, Thurlton and Haddiscoe.  If you are interested in learning more, be it for yourself or for anyone else you know who may make use of such a service, please come along and talk to them and complete their short survey.  They want to include the views of the potential users in their lottery application.  For further information please speak to Debbie Blowers at BACT on 01986 896896 or email her at bact@btconnect.com.

We are pleased to be able to announce that the WI recently voted to continue the Loddon branch and are endeavouring to increase numbers and their profile locally.  To aid them with this, we will be welcoming them as a ‘Community Stall’ at the market on Saturday 24th November, where they will be promoting membership of their group.  Please visit their stall and have a chat about the WI. It might be something you would enjoy getting involved in.

At this time of the year when the days are getting shorter and we begin to feel a chill in the air.  We tend to pack the BBQ away and our thoughts turn to comfort food.  Lovely warming stews, casseroles and soups. Homebird Bakes are now selling home-made soups to take away – a fabulous quick and easy meal. Below are two lovely recipes for the slow-cooker.  Prepare them overnight or in the morning and come home to a wonderful meal already to be eaten.

Lamb and onions in a red wine sauce
Ingredients
15 ml/tbsp olive oil
2 red onions, thinly sliced
5 ml/1 tsp sugar
8 lean lamb chops
Salt & freshly ground black pepper
15 ml/1 tbsp cornflour
300ml/½ pt red wine
10 ml/2 tsp dried rosemary

Method
Heat the oil in a frying pan and cook the onions with the sugar for about 10 mins, stirring occasionally, until golden brown.  Transfer to the slow-cooker.
Season the lamb with salt and pepper then, in the same pan, brown on all sides.
Arrange the chops on top of the onions in the slow-cooker.
Stir the cornflour into the remaining fat in the pan, then gradually stir in the red wine.  Add the rosemary.  Bring just to the boil, then pour over the lamb and onions.
Cover and cook on LOW for 4-6 hours.

Leek and cider hot-pot

40g/1½ oz butter or margarine
100g/4 oz bacon, rinded and chopped
900g/2 lb leeks, sliced
2 eating apples, peeled, cored and sliced
3 tbsp plain flour
300 ml/½ pint dry cider
300 ml/½ pint vegetable stock
Salt & freshly ground black pepper

Method
Heat the butter or margarine in a large saucepan and cook the bacon for about 5 mins, stirring occasionally, until golden brown.  Stir in the leeks and apples and toss together well.
Add the flour, mix well,  then gradually stir in the cider and stock.  Bring to the boil, stirring continuously.  Transfer to the slow-cooker.
Cover and cook on LOW for 6-8 hours.
Stir and adjust seasoning to taste before serving

13/10/2012
Loddon Farmers’ Market was a great success last time with a great buzz and a lot of enthusiasm from our customers and stallholders alike.  After a 3 week break, we are sure that you will have missed being able to buy your fresh, local and locally made produce and we look forward to welcoming you to the market once again on Saturday 13th October 9.30 – 1pm.

There has been some confusion and rumour lately that the market is closing.  We would like to confirm that the market is certainly not closing and that it is, in fact, the Loddon Country Market and the Loddon Women’s Institute Branch that are sadly closing shortly.  Our market continues to grow in popularity and we hope will continue to thrive with your support. Please pass the word on and let’s make the market even more successful.

We have a great market lined up for you this time with 24 stalls of food and drink and, as it’s the 2nd Saturday in the month, an additional 15 craft stalls will be at the market too.  The hall will be bustling and full of atmosphere.  When the market is lively, it is always a pleasure to visit.

This week is National Curry Week so to celebrate this we have included an excellent recipe for Lamb Curry.  If you want to make your own what better place to stop and discuss your recipe than at Jamoroc Catering where Rashid has a wealth of knowledge on spices and cooking curry to share with you.  Sharon at Buckenham Farms stall will also have fresh and frozen diced lamb and mutton available which is superb in curries!  Did you know: The Bhut Jolokia Chilli Pepper (also known as the Naga Jolokia), is the hottest pepper in the world, accompanied with its own health warning! This pepper is also known as the ‘Ghost Chilli’ or ‘Ghost Pepper’, and is grown in the Indian states of Assam, Nagaland and Manipur. We spend more than £250m a year on Indian food in the UK. Chilli is the most popular spice in the world and can help combat heart attacks and strokes and extends blood coagulation times preventing harmful blood clots.

Lamb Curry (Masala sauce)
Ingredients
750g lamb (preferably shoulder)
2 tablespoons thick plain yoghurt
1 teaspoon turmeric powder
3 tablespoons vegetable oil
½ teaspoon fenugreek seeds (optional)
6 cloves
3 green cardamom pods
3 bay leaves
1 cinnamon stick
2 dried red chillies
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 teaspoon coriander seeds
1 teaspoon fennel seeds
2 onions, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
2 inches root ginger, peeled and cut into juliennes
4 green chillies, finely slice 3 of then, and stab the last one with a knife
1 tablespoon coriander powder
1 tablespoon fennel powder
1 teaspoon chilli powder (optional)
200g chopped tomatoes
1 teaspoon sugar, to taste
1 teaspoon salt, to taste
3 tablespoons fresh coriander, chopped

Method
1. Firstly marinade the lamb. In a large bowl mix together the yogurt and turmeric. Add the lamb and rub all over massaging it into the meat. Cover and refrigerate overnight (if you have time).
2. Remove the lamb from the fridge and allow it to come to room temperature while you start the masala. Gently heat the vegetable oil in a large pan and add the fenugreek seeds, cloves, green cardamom, bay leaves, cinnamon stick and dried red chillies.
3. In a pestle & mortar slightly grind the cumin seeds, coriander seeds and fennel seeds.
4. Keep an eye on the masala in the pan and once they start sizzling add the coarsely crushed seeds.
5. Once they begin to sizzle add the onions. Stir well and allow to cook until they have turned soft and are starting to change colour to light golden brown.
6. Add the garlic, ginger and all the chillies and allow to cook for a further minute.
7. Stir in the coriander powder, fennel powder and chilli powder (if using) and add a few tablespoons of water to prevent the spices from burning.
8. Allow the masala to cook, leaving the spices to release their essential oils and aromas. This will take a few minutes and you will start to see a little oil rising to the surface. Stir often until it looks like all the masala has released most of its oils, adding a little more water if it starts to stick.
9. Add the marinated lamb.
10. Stir well and add the chopped tomatoes and sugar.
11. Top with enough water so it is just below the lamb. Stir well and bring to a simmer. Cover and allow to cook for at least 30 minutes. Every 10 minutes or so, stir the masala to ensure nothing is sticking to the base of the pan.
12. Once the essential oils have risen to the surface, stir through the coriander.
13. Taste and adjust the seasoning with salt and sugar.
14. Serve with more fresh coriander sprinkled on top, and with some pilau rice.
Tip: The longer the masala cooks with the lamb, the better, and because you are using lamb shoulder it will remain tender even if you cook it for longer than 30 minutes.

We have a new stallholder joining us at this market, Trio’s Deli & Café – you may have already visited them at their premises in Loddon.  They will be bringing a selection of the goodies that they sell in their shop – especially olives & cheese – including a range of Norfolk cheeses.  Something we have all been eagerly waiting for at the market.  Homebird Bakes will be bringing Savoury Pies, which I can recommend, and soups to the market in addition to her usual tasty offerings. We also have several new craft stalls and some old favourites too.  BusiBeni Crafts in addition to her usual colourful items will also have picture frames for the nursery/boys or girls bedrooms, show teddies and frogs.

She came straight round to collect her basket of goodies and declared that she never won anything – well she can’t say that now, can she!! 22/09/2012
Hello to all our market supporters.  I hope you have all had a good summer.  Over the summer months the market has continued to succeed and now that the seasons are changing and there are less events going on in East Anglia, we are starting to welcome many new and different producers to the market.  Autumn is definitely upon us, and, the harvest is in and it’s time to make the most of all the lovely fruits and vegetables that this wonderful county has to offer.  For your fresh vegetables visit Clinks Farm’s stall, and you can purchase excellent bread made with fresh grains from Tudor Bakehouse. For wonderful jams made with local produce visit Red Retriever and for tasty fresh chutneys we welcome Candi’s Chutneys, both are newcomers to the market. So please visit their stalls and give them a warm welcome.  The next market is on Saturday 22nd September 9.30 – 1pm.

We are now able to offer most of your fresh weekly shopping items including eggs, vegetables, bread, cakes and meat.  We would very much like to be able to offer you cheese, but although we are continually looking for a producer to join us, as yet, we have not had any success as there appear to be very few cheese producers in our region.  If you know of any cheese producer that may be interested in selling at the Farmers’ Market please let me know on 01502 677214. It was so sad to hear on Radio Norfolk today that the Loddon Country Market is to close after 40 years – perhaps they’d like to have a stall at Loddon Farmers’ Market?

As I said we have several new producers at the market this weekend.  One of these is Red Retriever who, produce a large variety of artisan preserves here in the Waveney Valley. The 'Red Retriever' logo came about following the arrival of their golden retriever, Little Star, just at the time they were seeking an outlet for the excess fruit and vegetables from their allotment. This, together with a large amount of foraging, is their raw material, everything they use they grow, with only a few tropical exceptions! The large quantity of sugar used is also sourced mainly from East Anglia! Due to the seasonal nature of their produce, and the vagaries of the English climate, they cannot promise that the same selection of products will be available two months running. When it’s gone, it’s gone and something new fills its' place. So if you like something, buy it, as you may be disappointed next time. Seasonal hampers are also available to order. Expect the unexpected from 'Red Retriever'.

Another new producer is Marsh Pig who produces lovely salami. Jackie says that it was selfishly born out of a personal love of excellent food. She was always sampling the local salami on her travels abroad and started thinking.....why can't we do this in the UK? Well it turns out you can, using modern technology and the very best quality ingredients. Only Blythburgh free range pork is used and they source the very best herbs and spices. There is no cooking involved, just months of patience whilst the product cures, and you really can see, taste and appreciate what goes into the product. Any short cuts are noticeable, cheap cuts of meat produce a stringy result and the need for a toothpick. Come and try some Marsh Pig Salami and taste the difference!"

We also welcome The Sweet Stall, run by Ellie, who will be selling a variety of traditional and children’s sweets which have been supplied by Gillards Sweet Shop in Harleston.  This shop contains over 100 jars of old fashioned sweets such as rhubarb and custard, aniseed balls, sherbet lemons and a range of sugar free sweets.  Ellie now wants to take them out to the markets and bring back some of that nostalgia.  If there is something you want and you can’t see it, ask Ellie and she will try to get it for you. The Sweet Stall will also stock lots of children’s sweets from the 70s and 80’s. The sweet stall is a new experience for Ellie and she hopes it will be a success. Please support her in this venture.

New to the market on Saturday is The Pie Barn - home of the handmade open top pie made with delicious butter short crust pastry with lemon zest in the sweet pies and local produce for the fillings.

At this weekend’s market, our guest stall will be The Creation Station who are launching Baby Discovery and Little Explorer art and craft classes for babies and 1-5 year olds (and their parents) from September.  Please come along and take part in some free activities as well as some exciting paid activities such as decorating Olympic Trophies.  If you book onto their classes at the event, you’ll qualify for their Buy One Get One Free class offer.  If you think this might be of interest to you, please come along and see The Creation Station and please tell your friends.

We hope that you will support our Community stall - Beccles Air Cadets. 759 (Beccles) Squadron of the Air Cadet Corps is a small but very ambitious group with members from Loddon, Chedgrave & the surrounding villages. In this day and age, when young people have such issues with image, they are immensely proud of their cadets and the relationship they foster with them.

The winner of the last FREE PRIZE DRAW was Ms Ryan of Loddon who was really surprised to win the fantastic selection of produce including a contribution donated by every stallholder. Ms Ryan left her gardening and dashed round to collect it.  We love to see a happy winner.  Can we please remind you to register when you attend the market for your chance to win this superb selection of local produce?

After a quiet market last time, a result of a lot of our stallholders being on holiday, we are all set for a busy market with a bumper amount of stalls all selling, good quality, reasonably priced local sourced and grown produce. Meat, bread and vegetables will be available along with lots of other goodies for your store cupboard.

We also have our popular craft market this weekend.  Time to start buying those unusual gift items to put away for Christmas, or simply treat yourself!  I recently purchased a very simple mobile phone cover from BusiBeni crafts for the princely sum of £2.00 and its superb!  In fact I am heading back this week to purchase a different one for every day of the week! Such a simple idea but very creative, and theyre washable too.  We have several new stallholders joining us CurlyJo Recycled stuff, Animal Antics, Pebble Pets, buttons N bows and Ethnic Gems. Be sure to visit them to see what they have on offer.

The winner of the last FREE PRIZE DRAW was Julie Powell who wrote: "I was delighted to win the hamper at the Farmer's Market and would like to thank everyone who provided items for the hamper. It was great fun finding out what I had won and I enjoyed the skate from the fish stall for my supper last night (It's my favourite fish).....look forward to seeing you all at the next market"..... it’s really nice to see a happy winner - Don't forget to register at the market for your chance to win such a superb selection of local produce.

Our featured stallholder this week is: D J Barnard Meats who have been at every market since we opened in 2011. Many of you already know Joan, who is always enthusiastic and brightens up the day with her smile whatever the weather. Barnards specialise in good quality Home Bred & Reared Beef and other home produced meats.  Look out for their mixed bbq packs, which are fantastic value. Their suckler herd of cattle is made up of traditional Hereford cows for their strong maternal instincts matched up with their Blonde D’Aquitane bull and a new addition to one of their herds, a British Blue bull, to give very strong beef calves. Their beef is hung for a minimum of two weeks to allow the meat to mature and maximise the eating quality. If you would like to see what they have on offer before coming to the market then please have a look at their website http://www.djbarnardmeats.co.uk/ where you can also pre-order from them and they will have your order ready to collect at the market.

Our recipe this week is:
Cauliflower Cheese topped Gammon Steaks (a delicious supper meal)

Ingredients
4 Gammon Steaks
1 Large Cauliflower broken into florets
100ml Half Fat Creme Fraiche
85g Grated Cheddar Cheese
1 tbsp Wholegrain mustard

Method
Prepare a pan of boiling water for cauliflower
Set grill to high and snip along the fat on the gammon with scissors so that it doesn’t curl
Place the gammon steaks on a baking tray and grill on one side for approx 10 mins.
Meanwhile cook cauliflower florets in boiling water for 5 mins until just tender
Drain and tip into a bowl with mustard, crème fraiche and two-thirds of the cheese and mix well
When gammon is crisp, flip over to other side for 10 mins. Then spoon cauliflower mixture over the steaks, sprinkle with remaining cheese and grill for a further 5 mins until cheese bubbles and browns.

The Cauliflower cheese also makes a wonderful vegetable dish on it’s own.
Gammon steaks available at Buckenham Farms stall!

We also have a new stallholder joining us this week.  Percy’s Pantry, a mother and daughter team Eileen and Karen from Kirby Cane will be selling their superb and varied selection of homemade produce.  I believe Jams, Biscuits, Coconut ice and Lemon Curd will be just some of the goodies on offer. So pop along and see us on Saturday 25th August 9.30 – 1pm at the Jubilee Hall.

The winner of the last market FREE PRIZE DRAW was Tom & Ingrid Woolley of Loddon.  I was delighted that our former neighbours at Waterloo had won this week’s prize.  It’s always nice to see happy winners! Always show your loyalty card when you come to the market to be included in the market draw to win a luxury hamper of goods with the compliments of the stallholders at the market.  You never know it might be your lucky day!

This week’s recipe is for Cheesy Topped Fish Pie (Don’t forget to visit Ocean Fresh for your fish)

Ingredients
400g cod fillets/loin
150g frozen peas
25g butter.
25g flour
200ml milk plus extra for poaching
40g cheddar cheese
100ml creme fraiche
700g potatoes
25g butter
75ml milk
150g grated mozzarella, 40g grated cheddar,10g grated parmesan,
Salt & Pepper to taste

Method
Preheat oven to 200c/400f/gas6. Peel and cube the potatoes and cook in boiling salted water until soft. Drain, and mash until smooth, adding the cheeses and S & P to taste, cover and leave to one side.

Place the fish in a large enough pan and cover with enough milk and poach the fish for 5 mins, until the flesh becomes opaque, and flakes easily. Remove the fish from the pan, and when cool enough to handle, remove any skin, and bones and break the fish up into nice sized chunks and put in the bottom of a baking dish.

Melt the butter add the flour and whisk in the milk, and combine until you have a smooth thickened white sauce. Add the peas to the sauce and the cheese, stir in the crème fraiche, season to taste.

Pour sauce over the fish and lay the mashed spuds on top of the fish and sauce add extra grated cheese on top (if you like) Bake in the oven for 25-30 mins, until the top is golden brown and crispy.

Another 2 weeks have gone by and summer is rolling on and we are still waiting for some settled sunny weather.  However, if the weather forecast is to be believed, it might just be this weekend.  So don’t forget to come to the market on Saturday 11th August 9.30 – 1pm and pick up some wonderful fresh produce for your bbq’s and picnics.  This week we have a chosen a wonderful recipe for Pork, Bacon & Apple Loaf, a wonderful hot supper dish or a great addition to a picnic.

We are sorry to hear that Select Meats, one of the Loddon butchers has closed.  Unfortunately with the re-location of the doctor’s surgery, there is not the amount of people parking in the high street and this has had a huge impact on all local trade.  We do hope that Loddon continues to thrive and as a market we will do what we can to support the local shops.  If anyone wishes to have a local or community stall at the market to promote their business, society or charity in Loddon, Chedgrave or the surrounding villages, please contact John Yale on 01502 677214 and we will be very pleased to accommodate you.

Paul at The Tudor Bakehouse has been working hard to try and produce a decent quality gluten-free white loaf which he has now achieved after spending some time in Germany researching the ingredients. Because the flour is so expensive, they cannot afford to have any waste on this product, so they will bring 2 or 3 loaves to each market, (more if sales take off!) but if any customer would like to place an order for a minimum of 4 loaves at a time they would be able to bring these along freshly made. Your order would need to be placed by the Wednesday before the market, either text Paul on 07740265139, or by email to paul@tudorbakehouse.co.uk, or through their website www.tudorbakehouse.co.uk. Are you holding an event or BBQ this summer (wishfully !) do you need a large amount of baps or rolls? Tudor Bakehouse could supply them at the market to save you driving elsewhere. They do different shapes and sizes, prices vary according to size and quantity.
Remember that you can purchase gluten-free cakes at the Cywebakecakes stall or gluten-free sausages or gluten-free sausage-meat from the Buckenham Farms stall.

Our charity stall this week is Tina’s Tombola and Alison’s Plant Stall.  You may remember them from a previous market in March.  They have been tirelessly fund raising for Tina’s nephew Andy, who was involved in an accident which has left him paralysed and unable to walk.  Andy is 29 and has his whole life ahead of him. He has been going to physiotherapy in Cambridge twice weekly, which he finds very tiring, and sometimes when he feels low, he wonders whether there is any point in all the work.  However, with the help of his family and friends he pulls himself up and gets going again.  Andy has been chosen to trial a new ‘walking suit’ and although it is early days Andy is willing to try whatever is on offer.  However, none of these treatments come cheap and therefore Andy’s family have to continually fund raise, but thanks to the wonderful generosity of people like Loddon Farmers’ market customers Andy is able to continue to strive towards his goal of walking once again. Please visit Tina and Alison’s stall and help Andy achieve his goal.

This coming week we also have our craft market.  A great place to buy that birthday present and card or treat yourself to something nice.  BusiBeni Crafts will be at the market.  On her stall you will find beautiful handmade bags, baby bibs, spectacle cases, mobile phone holders, peg bags, lavender sachets, gift boxes and many other wonderful things.  Take time to browse around the stalls you never know what you might find.

This weeks’ recipe is for Pork, Bacon & Apple Loaf (Delicious hot or cold)

Ingredients:                                                                       You will need:
450g Pork Mince                                                               2lb loaf tin
125g Bacon bits or streaky bacon                                     Sheet of tin foil
2 Apples, cored and coarsely chopped
Bunch spring onions finely chopped
Bunch parsley finely chopped
1 egg

Method
Pre-heat oven to gas mark 5/190c.
In a large bowl add mince, bacon, apples and spring onions and mix well
Season with as pinch of sea salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper
Add parsley and egg and combine with your hands, squishing mixture together, so it’s really well combined.  Spoon into loaf tin and flatten so surface is level.
Cover with foil, then stand loaf tin in a roasting tin and pour cold water to come about halfway up side of loaf tine.  Place in oven to cook for 45 mins to 1 hr, then remove foil and cook for a further 15 mins.  Leave to cool slightly before removing from tin.  Serve in slices with some good quality pickle & bread.

28/07/2012
Well folks, summer is definitely here! In fact the difference in the weather in the last 2 weeks is quite remarkable.  The farmers are working round the clock to get the hay and harvest in and the countryside has come to life. With the sunshine arriving, the strawberries are ripening and Mortons will be joining us once more at the market this week on Saturday 28th July 9.30 – 1pm.  Don’t forget to pick up a punnet of these wonderful versatile summer fruits.  See below a recipe for Eton Mess.

Clinks Care Farm’s produce was very well received at the last market and I am pleased to say that they will be selling their Market Garden produce once again at this coming market. It has been grown for its taste – so don’t be deceived by its looks. Please keep supporting them as I think you will agree it is wonderful to have fresh vegetables at the market once again.
If you are interested in the work that is being done at Clinks Care Farm or you are interested in finding out how to obtain a referral please talk to Doeke or Iris Dobna on their stall on Saturday or telephone 01502 679134 or e-mail admin@clinkscarefarm.org to find out more. Clinks Care Farm is a social enterprise, so all their profits are put back into the business for those attending the care farm and the wider local community.

Once again Plan to Cook will be at the market and this week will be demonstrating some delicious low fat chocolate brownies (which will be on sale too) and also a tasty herb, sundried tomato and ale bread which is only 120 calories per slice.  As usual there will be daal kits and the very popular vegetarian sausages too.  Special offer this Saturday is a couple of places on Dinner Party Cookery Course Saturday 4th August 10am - 1pm - just £25 per person which includes all ingredients (saving of over 30%). Make sure you pay them a visit!

The winner of the last FREE PRIZE DRAW was Mrs Thorpe of Loddon who was delighted to win!  Always show your loyalty card when you come to the market to be included in the market draw to win a luxury hamper of goods with the compliments of the stallholders at the market.  You never know it might be your lucky day!

Make the most of the season and buy some beautiful fresh strawberries from Mortons.  Everyone knows that strawberries are delicious. However, did you know that one cup of strawberries contains over 13% of the RDA of dietary fibre, yet only 43 calories. The dietary fibre in strawberries helps to keep digestion regular, as well as lowers blood pressure and curbs overeating. However, if you want something a little more luxurious try the recipe below:

Loddon Farmers Market Eton Mess
Ingredients

2 Large Punnets of Fresh Strawberries
6 Good quality meringues
1 1/2pt Double Cream
Tub Creme Fraiche
Icing Sugar
Sprigs of mint

Method

Hull Strawberries and chop into small pieces and place in bowl
Lightly cover with balsamic vinegar and leave for up to an hour in the fridge
Whip cream until it forms peaks
Remove strawberries from fridge and drain off balsamic vinegar
Cover with a dusting of icing sugar
Fold strawberries and crème fraiche into the whipped cream
Return to fridge
Just before serving crumble meringues into mixture, reserving a few pieces for placing on top of the mix. Either serve in a large bowl or individual sundae dishes.  Finish with a sprig of mint and enjoy.

If you read Monday’s EDP, you will have read how Watton Farmers’ Market has just closed after 12 years and that Dereham Farmers’ Market will be calling it a day after September….I’m delighted to say that Loddon Farmers’ Market is bucking the trend….unlike other markets, Loddon will have MORE stallholders this week – with FIVE new stallholders along with the usual regulars!!

Clinks Care Farm is a 143 acre Norfolk County farm in Toft Monks, South Norfolk. Set up as a care farm it combines the care of the land with the care of people. It offers the opportunity for disadvantaged people to work on a farm. Working on a farm helps participants improve confidence, self esteem and motivation. People also have the opportunity to learn new skills whilst on the farm.  Some of the groups of people that can benefit from participating in Farming on Prescription are:
People with mental health problems, people with learning difficulties, older people including those with dementia, disaffected young people and those suffering with physical health problems/ brain injury.  If you are interested in the work that is being done at Clinks Care Farm or you are interested in finding out how to obtain a referral please talk to Doeke or Iris on their stall on Saturday or telephone 01502 679134 or e-mail admin@clinkscarefarm.org to find out more.

Opa Hay’s Brewery is a small family run micro-brewery situated in the village of Aldeby on the Norfolk/Suffolk border. Opening the brewery was a life long ambition of owner Arnth Engel who had always enjoyed home brewing but harboured desires of brewing on a much larger scale. They will be bringing their lovely bottled beers to Loddon on the second  Saturdays of each month.
Smudge of Smudges Norfolk Honey and Beekeeping services, in the final part of the British Bee Keepers Association Master Bee Keeper Qualifications, offers Quality Local Honey at very competitive prices, as well as Beeswax furniture polish and cold hand creams. The Mack Family have been farming at Surlingham since 1921 on the light free draining soils on the South side of the River Yare. Oil seed rape has been grown on the farm for several years and the rape seed oil produced will have been grown, pressed and bottled at the farm with the aim to market as much as possible locally. This enables full traceability of the oil, from field to table. We have also been singled out by Delia Smith as an “Oil that Impressed – try it at the market!

Kate Price says “Healthy Twist is the company making healthy eating easier!  All your favourite meals and snacks from pizza to pasta, curry to cake, pies to pancakes are all cleverly twisted to make them lower in salt, fat and sugar, higher in protein and fibre, and simply packed full of vegetables and fruit.  It makes them incredibly tasty and yet amazingly good for you! 23/06/2012
We would like to say a big thank you to all our loyal customers new and old, and to our stallholders as this week we are pleased to be celebrating Loddon Farmers Market 1st year anniversary on Saturday 23rd June 9.30 – 1pm.

Over the last year the market has continued to  grow and has become a great success,  whilst some Farmers’ Markets are closing – Watton holds its last market in July and Great Hockham is about to close.  Loddon Farmers’ Market is bucking the trend. Held on 2nd & 4th Saturdays of each month, Loddon Farmers’ Market (a FARMA member) hosts local producers at each market – all from within 30 miles of Loddon - selling local produce at reasonable prices – many lower than supermarkets!!

As a thank you to our customers we will be providing FREE face painting for all children that come to the market to celebrate our anniversary!  It will give parents a chance to leave there little ones in safe hands as you take a look around the market.

The next market falls on National Market Day – Love your Local Market and we are proud to support this day. The event – recommended by Mary Portas in her December 2011 Report – will be run by the National Association of British Market Authorities with support from the Markets Alliance and the National Markets Traders Federation.

Shake off that rain, fire up the coals and grills as Britain prepares for British Burger Week 2012.  This national event is set aside to pay homage to ‘the burger’. Traditionally ‘the burger’ began its life as shredded steak meat, however the terminology has since evolved to encompass a wide range of ingredients mixed together, served in a sliced bread roll often accompanied with salads and sauces or relishes. You can find wonderful beef burgers on D. J. Barnard’s stall and lamb burgers and pork & apple burgers on the Buckenham Farms stall.

This week we will be hosting a Tombola stall to raise money for Macmillan Cancer charities in memory of Peggy Crown (Sharon’s mother) who lost her long and brave fight with lung cancer recently. She used to be a regular supporter of the Loddon Farmers market.  You may remember seeing her being pushed around in her wheelchair and chatting to everybody.  The money raised with be added to the money that was raised at our sister market Poringland on Jubilee weekend and sent to this worth charity.  Please come and support this worthy charity.

We are lucky this week to have a Cookery Demonstration hosted by Sarah Bush of Cook@Home – Sarah is an experienced cook who over the years has run a cooking school in France, written food articles for magazines and tested recipes for cookbooks. Recently moved to Thurton she is happiest teaching others and passing on her wealth of food knowledge. Cook@Home brings to you, in your own home, a hands-on cooking class which is informative but more importantly fun and it doesn't matter if you've been cooking meals for the family for years or never picked up a wooden spoon before. You're never too old to learn! Sarah will be showing us how to cook Chinese Steamed Dumplings with a Dipping Sauce.

We have three new producers joining us at this market.  Raw Nibbles produces many Vegan delights including dips, crackers and delicious raw chocolate.  For Goodness Cake will have a variety of cakes on offer to tempt our palates. Homebird Bakes will be bringing a selection of their lovely savouries. Why not visit these new stalls and see what’s on offer.

The winner of the last FREE PRIZE DRAW was Mr Robinson – he was shocked and pleased to be told he had won.  Don’t forget to show your loyalty card when you next come to the market to be included in the draw to win a superb hamper of goods from the stallholders at the market.  You never know it might be your lucky day!

It is your continued support that will help the market expand and thrive.  Our next market is Saturday 26th May, 9.30am – 1.00pm.  Don’t forget to show your loyalty card at the desk and enter your name into the Free Prize Draw to win a basket of Farmers Market produce from our stallholders.  The lucky winner of the last market draw was Mr Adams of Loddon who was delighted at the quantity and range of produce that he won.

Our continuing aim for the Farmers’ Market is to:
• Bring Fresh Local Produce to Local people
• Provide an opportunity for small local food businesses and farmers to sell direct
• Support and promote the ethical, environmental and social benefits of direct sales
• Bring people into Loddon and help to add to a sense of community
• Encourage and support new food producers who have not sold at Farmers Markets previously to develop and sell their local produce

In each newsletter we aim to feature a stallholder who attends the market, so that you can get to know your producers and where your food is coming from.  Now that the sun is shining at last it’s BBQ season and what better way to relax whilst waiting for the food to cook than with a glass of chilled cider or apple juice which can be purchased at the market from East Norfolk Trading Company - set up in 2009 by Russell Watson, after many years of brewing cider at home for personal use. The brewery is based in farm buildings within the Broadland village of Martham. Currently they use apples grown in Norfolk and North Suffolk and they have recently planted a small orchard of 70 trees to make their cider from in the future. The brews are made in the traditional Norfolk way using a mixture of culinary, desert & crab apples. After fermentation, the cider is matured for 3-9 months in 200 litre containers before being blended.

At this weeks’ Loddon Farmers Market there will be four brews ranging from medium sweet to dry which can be purchased in 2.5 litre reusable containers.  There will also be 3 bottled apple juices available made from fresh pressed apples and pasteurised within 48 hours. It is nothing but pure apple juice and tastes like pure nectar.  If you would like to know more about the cider and the process of making it, simply ask Russell when you visit his stall at the market.

This week the Eastern Daily Press are re-launching their ‘Shop Here’ Support  your local economy campaign which will coincide with The National Farmers Union, ‘Farming Delivers for Britain campaign which aims to make people proud to buy British food and realise farming’s important role in the economy. The campaign “Farming Delivers for Britain will highlight the key role played by an industry that employs 40,000 people in the East of England and produced food worth almost £3bn in 2010. There is the idea that locally sourced produce is more expensive and supermarkets are cheaper but this is not always the case and local produce is fresher and tastes much better.  By shopping at Loddon Farmer’s Market you are supporting the campaign as we bring fresh produce to you, produced locally, without the food miles and boosting the economy in the local region.  Customers have shown us that they are happy to pay a little bit more to have locally sourced food because it tastes nicer and they prefer it to the supermarket option.  Support your Loddon Farmers’ Market and ‘Shop Here’.

We are always looking for new producers for the market, if you are interested or know of anyone who may like a stall please contact John Yale on 01502 677214 or jjy@moon-light.co.uk.  If you would like to sell at the market, but do not know how to go about starting, free advice is always available.

Sadly one of the founders of the market, Melanie Spelman has recently had to give up running the market which is a real shame and she will be missed.  Mel says “It is with regret that I have to inform you, that due to family illness I no longer have the time to dedicate to the Farmers' Markets in Loddon or Poringland. Thankfully, John Yale is happy to continue to run both of these markets, bringing fresh local produce to local people from local producers - food like it used to taste!  I am proud to have been part of setting up two successful markets over the past year and I would like to thank you for your support.  I will still be supporting and shopping at the market and hope to see you there”.

New to the market this time is Sweeney’s Pies, WhyNot Brewery & Truly Healthy Scrumptious. Why not visit their stalls and give their fine produce a try!

Also, we would like to remind you about our excellent Green Apple Cafe.  Sarah & Rachel will now be at every market and look forward to bringing you their usual high standard, delicious and varied menu using locally sourced ingredients. New to the cafe is the Farmers Market Breakfast, a bargain at £4.50! The breakfast will contain all locally sourced, from the market, ingredients – celebrate all that’s good about Norfolk produce.
